OUR MISSION

It is well known amongst those in the field that there is a serious issue of diversity and inclusion in physics and astronomy, however, solving this pressing issue requires more than just acknowledging that there is a problem.  Currently, only 20% of those who receive a PhD in physics are women and  38% of PhDs given in astronomy are women. Further, of the women who received a bachelors in either physics or astronomy, only 2.5% were represented by African American women, 3% Latinx women, 14% Asian women, and 80% White women.

As this is the first space of its kind that is specifically aimed to support BIWOC in physics and astronomy, our long-term goal to improve the retention rate for women from underrepresented communities in physics and astronomy, to bring attention to the issues that we face from the daily to the long term basis, and to ultimately allow everyone from all backgrounds the access and ability to uncover the mysteries of our universe

About Us

We are a group of undergraduate, graduate, and faculty members at UCSC. ACS is curated for BIWOC in physics and astronomy and is intended to serve as a Counter Space in science.

What is a Counter Space?

  • A physical and metaphysical space where marginalized people can resist the dominant culture imposed on them.

  • Find validation and belonging in their fields

  • Vent frustrations about racism and sexism

  • Express both their identities as scientists and women of color
